Home settee
« on: September 05, 2010, 04:33:27 PM »
I'm sorry if this seems a stupid question but I don't do interior repairs so I'll ask the experts.  We have a cream leather settee and chairs at home.  It's getting a bit tatty as we have 3 kids.  My Mrs fancies a new suite in a darker colour.  I don't want to pay for a new suite till the kids are older and respect it more.  As a cheaper alternative do you reckon I can respray it using my water based system?

I'm assuming that I can't lacquer it with normal shiny clearcoat and that I can't just leave it as bare paint so I'll probably have to apply a matt lacquer such as you use in engine bays.  Not sure how cheap it will be either as it's going to use a fair bit of paint.

Is this an option or am I barking up the wrong tree?

It certainly can be done, maybe worth getting a quote from a specialist for the job first, some are not too expensive. I think some of the interior guys on here will help you more than me but like anything you have to get the prep right.

My upholstery guy buys his supplies from www.woolies-trim.co.uk/c-117-leather-renovation.aspx

You could always give Nationwide a call and ask about leather paints. The normal waterbase is not suitable.

Thanks for the quick replies.  It's probably not something that I'll attempt myself as I can see it all going wrong and I'll end up buying a new suite anyway.  Best leave it to the experts.

Clean and prep using red scotch the roughen up with 600. Get the colour pre mixed from NWSR and add crosslinker at 1%. Spray as normal waterbase but wear a mask. The cross linker is iso.

Thanks.  Talking of crosslinker and changing the subject slightly, do you use it in outside repairs on cars?  I used to use it but then stopped after I spoke to Roger at Paintwerx.  He reckoned that it's sole purpose was to harden the basecoat and make it more water resistant and that it wasn't absolutely necessary. I can understand where you're coming from on a settee as I guess it means you don't have to lacquer it.  For cars though, on the basis that you're going to cover it with clearcoat anyway I stopped using it outside.  Now I just add the water based thinners on their own to my paint system and forget the crosslinker.  Just have to be careful if when it rains.
